Fujima-ryu

Japanese:
Fujima-ryu

A school of Japanese dance. The founder of the school was the first Fujima Kanbei (?-1769), but the name is no longer passed down. It is broadly divided into two families: one that follows Fujima Kanjuro, and the other that follows Fujima Kan'emon.

(1) Kanjuro Family In this lineage, Kanbei III (1798-1819), who took the name Kanjuro, is not counted in the lineage, but his adopted son Kanjuro (the second in name, 1796-1840) is considered the originator (first generation). This originator and the 6th generation (the 7th in name, 1900-1990, who became the 2nd Fujima Kanso in 1990) are important figures. One of the adopted sons of Kanbei III was Nakamura Utaemon IV, who later became Nishikawa Senzo IV, and one of his disciples was Nishikawa Senzo IV. The 6th generation was so active that he dominated choreography at theaters, and had many disciples who were kabuki actors. In 1983 (Showa 58), the eldest daughter of the 6th generation took the name of Fujima Michinori, the 7th head of the family, and in 1990 (Heisei 2), she took the name Fujima Kanjuro 7. His eldest son took the name of Yasunori II. Later, in 2002, the second Yasushi succeeded the name of the eighth Kanjuro. The wife of the sixth Kanjuro, Fujima Murasaki, founded the Murasaki school of the Fujima school in 1988 and became its head.

(2) Kan'emon family The first head of the Kan'emon family (1813-51) was Ichikawa Kintaro, a disciple of Ichikawa Danjuro VII, who became a disciple of the second head of the Kan'emon family (the first head of the Kan'emon family) Kanjuro (some say he studied under Kanbei III) and took the name Kan'emon. The second head of the Kan'emon family (1840-1925) became a choreographer at the Kabukiza Theater and built the foundation for the family's prosperity. The third head of the Kan'emon family (1870-1949) was Matsumoto Koshiro VII, who developed the style, and after him every generation of Kabuki actors also worked as kabuki actors. The fourth head of the Kan'emon family (1913-89) was Onoe Shoroku II, and the fifth head of the Kan'emon family (1946-87) took the name in 1975 (Showa 50). The first head of the Kan'emon family was Onoe Tatsunosuke (posthumously given the name Onoe Shoroku III). The 6th (1975- ) took the name in 1993 (Heisei 5). The 4th was Onoe Matsuroku. This school produced many outstanding students, including Fujima Masaya and Fujima Fujiko.
