It is said to be native to India, Southeast Asia or Africa, and is now widely cultivated as food in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. It is an annual creeping plant of the legume family. It is also called Sengo-kumame (Sengoku-mame) or Ajimame (Aji-mame). It resembles a kidney bean. The leaves have three leaflets. From July to October, long inflorescences grow from the leaf axils, producing numerous butterfly-shaped flowers. The flowers are reddish purple or white, about 2 cm long, and resemble wisteria flowers, hence the Japanese name. The fruit is flat and broadly crescent-shaped, 5 to 7 cm long, with a thick style remaining at the tip. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
