This brown algae from the family Cylindricae resembles the stems of torreya grass and grows in colonies on rocks in the intertidal zone in winter (illustration). Its body is cylindrical, 15-30 cm long, with numerous constrictions at short intervals. It is hollow inside and 0.5-1 cm thick. Cultivation experiments have confirmed that it grows from winter to spring, disappearing in summer and growing as a shell-like alga that clings to rocks. The body of Cylindrica we see is a gametophyte, and this shell-like body is a sporophyte. It is found along coastlines all over the world.
