Mount Zhongnan

A famous mountain located in the middle of the Qinling Mountains in the southern part of Shaanxi Province, China. It is also called Nanshan, Zhounanshan, Taiyi Mountain, etc. It is also a general term for the beautiful and historically rich mountain peaks in the southern mountain range of the ancient capital of Xian, such as Nanwutai Mountain, Cuihua Mountain, Li Mountain, and Guifeng Mountain. The main peak is 2,604 meters above sea level. The most famous of these is Cuihua Mountain, with a lake called Shuiquchi on the top of the mountain, and the surrounding area is a tourist center. On the mountainside are the ruins of Taiyi Palace, built by Emperor Wu of Han. Many temples have been built on Nanwutai Mountain since ancient times, and an old tower from the Sui Dynasty still remains.

中国、陝西(せんせい／シャンシー)省南部、秦嶺(しんれい／チンリン)山脈中部に位置する名峰。単に南山また周南山、太乙(たいいつ)山などとも称する。南五台山、翠華(すいか)山、驪山(りざん)、圭峰(けいほう)山など、古都西安(せいあん／シーアン)の南部山地の歴史的伝承に富み、風景の美しい諸峰の総称でもある。主峰は標高2604メートル。なかでももっとも景勝の地として有名なのは翠華山で、山上には水湫池(すいしゅうち)と称する湖水があって、周囲は観光の中心となり、山腹には漢の武帝が建てた太乙宮の遺跡がある。南五台山には古くから多くの寺院が建てられ、いまも隋(ずい)代の古塔が残る。
