…Although the time when the marriage was promised was considered the start of the marriage, and there was a common law principle that did not recognize the legitimation of illegitimate children, in manorial customs, the legitimacy of a child was determined based on the time when the marriage was promised, and it is said that the church ceremony had legal meaning when both parties agreed on a dowry and the husband declared at the church door that he had established a dowry for his wife on his own property, not a mass in the church. It was almost the same in France, and in 1975, Jean Louis Flandrin (1931- ) described marriage in the French rural society around the 17th century in his book “Peasant Love” as follows: “The factors that were taken into consideration at the time of marriage were the same status, such as the amount of dowry of the parties, and other factors other than love. A girl without dowry could not marry, no matter how beautiful she was, and had no choice but to go into service in another household or enter a convent. …
