A classical Greek lyric poet. Dates of birth and death unknown. Born in Miletus, Ionia, he was active from the end of the 5th century BCE to the first half of the 4th century BCE, and is said to have been friends with the tragic poet Euripides. His works were destroyed, but in 1902, the final part of his dithyrambic poem "The Persians," about 240 lines long, was discovered in an ancient papyrus scroll. This is a song-story in the form of a lyric poem that vividly depicts the Persian forces' disastrous defeat in the naval battle of Salamis, incorporating theatrical techniques, but no isomorphic rhythmic repetitions can be found.
