Sculptor. Born in Kagawa Prefecture. After studying at Takamatsu Technical School, he graduated from the Tokyo School of Fine Arts' main course in sculpture in 1908 (Meiji 41). He went to France as an overseas student sponsored by the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce, and studied drawing under Jean-Paul Laurens at the Academie Julian. He was later recognized by Rodin and served as his assistant in his later years. He returned to Japan in 1913 (Taisho 5) due to illness, and was welcomed as a member of the Nikakai Sculpture Department when it was founded in 1914. In 1929 (Showa 4), he opened the Banshu Gijuku School and taught many young artists. In 1935, he was appointed a member of the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts and resigned from the Nikakai, but passed away shortly thereafter. In contrast to Rodin's style, he showed a gentle and attractive style of solid and tranquil expression, and his representative works include "Suzanne," "Blonde," and "Nude." His wife, Eiko Fujikawa (1901-1983), was also known as a painter. [Tamon Miki] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
