Kajikawa

Japanese: 加治川 - かじかわ
Kajikawa
A former village area in northern Niigata Prefecture, northern Shibata City. It is located on the right bank of the Kaji River, in the northern part of the Niigata Plain. In 1955, Kaji Village and Kanazuka Village were merged to form Kajikawa Village. In 2005, it was incorporated into Shibata City. It is divided into an old mountain settlement on the east side and a new rice field settlement on the west side, which was created by the reclamation of Shiunjigata Lake after the mid-Edo period. In addition to early-season rice, it produces shiitake mushrooms and vegetables. The Tochidaira cherry forest on Mt. Omine is a national natural monument. The famous cherry blossom spot on the Kaji River embankment was cut down and disappeared due to restoration work after two floods in 1966 and 1967. The Okuyamaso Castle Ruins are designated as a national historic site. Part of it belongs to Tainai-Nioji Prefectural Natural Park.

Kajigawa

This river originates in the Iide Mountains in northern Niigata Prefecture, flows west through the northern part of the Niigata Plain, and empties into the Sea of Japan. Its total length is approximately 65 km. In the early modern period, its course was developed as part of the Shibata Domain's flood control and rice reclamation policies. With the completion of the Kaji River Diversion Channel (1914) as a direct national project, the river basin became a grain-producing region. However, torrential rains in 1966 and 1967 caused the downstream area to break its levees, resulting in continuous major damage. As a result, the Kaji River Flood Control Dam and Uchinokura Multipurpose Dam were constructed upstream as part of an improvement and restoration project. There are power plants on the Kaji River and the Iide River No. 1 and No. 2. The upstream part of the river is part of Bandai-Asahi National Park.
