In old China, there were seven reasons for divorcing one's wife, and three conditions that limited it. The seven reasons (also called the seven reasons) were: (1) no children (referring to males), (2) adultery, (3) not serving one's parents-in-law, (4) gossiping, (5) theft, (6) jealousy, and (7) a serious disease (such as leprosy). If one of these conditions is met, a husband can divorce his wife. The three conditions not to go are: (1) if the wife has survived the mourning period of her parents-in-law, (2) if the husband married her when he was poor and lowly and is now wealthy, or (3) if the wife's family no longer exists. If one of these conditions is met, divorce is not permitted even if there are seven reasons. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
