Fujiutsugii - Fujiutsugii

Japanese: フジウツギ - ふじうつぎ
Fujiutsugii - Fujiutsugii

A deciduous shrub of the Buddleaceae family. The stem is square with fins on the ridge, 1-1.5 meters tall, and branches from the base. The leaves are opposite, broadly lanceolate, pointed at the tip, and have shallowly incised wavy sawtooth edges. The leaf surface is wrinkled. From July to September, the plant produces spike-like inflorescences 10-20 cm long that hang down at the end of the branches like a tail, and many pale pink-purple flowers bloom in a line on one side. The corolla is tubular and slightly curved, with a quarter at the end. There are four stamens, attached 1/4 of the way down from the base of the flower tube. The fruit is oval, brown, and ripens in autumn, splitting into two. It grows on sunny riverbanks in mountain valleys, and is distributed in Honshu and Shikoku. The whole plant contains pungent essential oils and saponins, making it a poisonous plant.

The genus Buddleia is found in the tropics and subtropics of Asia, America and Africa, and consists of about 100 species of shrubs, trees, and rarely herbs.
