A deciduous shrub of the Rosaceae family (APG classification: Rosaceae). It grows to a height of 1-2 meters. The branches are well branched. The leaves are opposite, simple, ovate, pointed, and have serrated edges. In April and May, a single white, 4-petaled flower measuring 3-4 cm in diameter blooms at the end of a new branch. There are four sepals with small serrated edges. The same number of accessory sepals are linear and very small. There are many stamens and four pistils. The fruit is an achene-shaped drupe that ripens black and is shiny. It grows rarely in the Chugoku region, but is also distributed in the Korean peninsula and China. It is often planted in gardens. The genus Kerria is a small genus with only this species in the world, and is the only genus in the Rosaceae family with opposite leaves. In China, the fruit and roots are used for medicine.
