Muscular rigidity

Japanese: 筋性防御 - きんせいぼうぎょ（英語表記）muscular rigidity

When any acute inflammation occurs in the abdominal cavity, the abdominal wall in that area reflexively tenses up and hardens, making it possible to feel it from the outside. For example, in the case of acute appendicitis, this symptom appears in the right lower abdomen. This is called muscular guarding, named after the defense of the affected area. This phenomenon occurs when the abdominal wall muscles in the area controlled by the same spinal nerve as the peritoneum stimulated by inflammation reflexively tense up, and the strength of this tension roughly corresponds to the strength of the stimulus. This symptom does not appear when the inflammation in the abdominal cavity does not affect the peritoneum.

腹腔内になんらかの急性炎症が起こると，反射的にその部分の腹壁が緊張して硬くなり，外から触れられるようになる。たとえば急性虫垂炎の場合，この症状は右下腹部に現れる。これを筋性防御といい，患部を防衛するという意味から名づけられた。この現象は炎症によって刺激された腹膜と同一の脊髄神経の支配領域の腹壁筋肉が反射的に緊張するもので，この緊張の強さは刺激の強さとほぼ一致する。腹腔内の炎症が腹膜に及ばないときには，この症状は現れない。
