Deck. A ship's floor, equivalent to the floors of each floor of a building, is divided into upper and lower parts by laying steel or wooden boards on the deck beams, and is the main part where living and working areas, machinery, and cargo are loaded. Structurally, it is responsible for the vertical strength of the hull and is required to be strong and watertight against wind, rain, waves, and sunlight. There are steel decks and wooden decks, and wooden decks are made of hard wood such as teak and zelkova, and soft wood such as pine, cypress, and cedar. On passenger ships, the living areas and passage areas are made of ordinary steel decks. The topmost full-length deck is called the upper deck, and those below it are called the second deck, third deck, etc. Depending on the purpose, location, and shape, there are various names such as bridge deck, promenade deck, boat deck, compass deck, freeboard deck, wave-blocking deck, raised deck, flat deck, and platform deck.
