...The dense, cylindrical inflorescence and the bracts that open at the top are reminiscent of a pineapple. Other species also cultivated include Eucomis undulata Ait., which has larger flowers, and Eucomis bicolor Backer, which has purple-black spots at the base of the flower. Both have large, sturdy bulbs that are cold-resistant and grow well in deep, fertile cultivated soil.
