Lassus

Japanese:
Lassus
A composer of the Flemish school. In addition to the Latin spelling Orlandus Lassus, the Italianized spelling Orlando di Lasso and the French spelling Orlande de Lassus are also used. Born in Mons, in what is now southern Belgium, he went to Italy at the age of 12 after his musical talent was recognized. After gaining musical experience in Milan, Naples and other parts of Italy, he became the church conductor in Rome in 1553. He published his first works, the first volume of Madrigals (1555) and the first volume of Motets (1556), both secular and religious pieces, in Venice and Antwerp, respectively. He moved to Munich in 1556 at the invitation of Elector Albrecht V of Bavaria (1528-1579), and became the conductor of the Munich court orchestra in 1564. He devoted the latter half of his life to this position, traveling throughout Flanders, France, Italy, and Germany, and interacting with many composers. He died in the same year as Palestrina, another great master of the late Renaissance. He left behind a huge number of compositions, over 2,000 of which were printed throughout Europe during his lifetime, establishing a solid reputation for himself. He was an international man versed in many languages, and in addition to religious music such as masses and motets, he composed a wide variety of secular vocal music, including hundreds of Italian madrigals, French chansons, and German polyphonic lieds. All of these compositions reflected the musical styles of each region and contributed greatly to the development of their respective fields. He had a greater influence on composers of his time than Palestrina, and G. Gabrieli and others came from his school. In addition to the innovativeness of his harmonic progressions and rhythms, his dramatic emotional expression in line with the lyrics was notable, presaging the coming Baroque style.
