[Indigestion in infants and young children]
Diarrhea in infants and young children occurs for a variety of reasons, but it has only been recently that it has become possible to analyze the mechanism of diarrhea. In the past, therefore, the prevailing view was that diarrhea in infants and young children was caused by insufficient digestion of food, and the condition in infants with diarrhea was called dyspepsia, which was the name of the disease. This name was mainly used by the German school, whereas the American school used the name infantile diarrhea, which describes the symptom itself, diarrhea.

　乳児，幼児の下痢は種々の原因で起こるが，その下痢の発生機序の分析が可能となったのは最近のことである。したがって昔は，乳幼児の下痢は食物の消化が十分に行われないために起こるという考え方が中心となっており，乳幼児が下痢をする状態のことを消化不良症Dyspepsieとよび，これが病名として用いられていた。この病名はおもにドイツ学派が用いていたものであるが，それに対してアメリカ学派では，下痢という症状そのものを表した病名，乳児下痢症infantile diarrheaを用いていた。…
