Gance, A. (English spelling) GanceA

...French film director. Born and died in Paris. He left an indelible mark on the history of silent film with three epics: War and Peace (1919), The White Rose of the Railroad (1923), and Napoleon (1927), and was called the "Victor Hugo of cinema" and the "D.W. Griffith of Europe." In War and Peace and The White Rose of the Railroad, he created a flash-like effect by editing extremely short cuts from 32 frames (2 seconds in silent projection) to just one frame, and pioneered the technique of "flash cutting," which incites "a kind of sudden outburst of emotion in which the audience and the film become one and are excited" (Iijima Tadashi).
