...In the United States, based on the experience of the Civil War, the first general meeting of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, founded in 1881, resolved to set standards for screw threads. This is the ancestor of the current ISO inch screw. In Japan, cement had been used and produced since the early Meiji period, but the demand for cement rapidly increased due to the rise of the railroad industry craze and the demonstration of the vulnerability of brick buildings by the Nobi earthquake (1891).
