Ryogetsu Ishimura
1879-1938 A biwa (Japanese lute) performer from the Meiji to early Showa periods.
Born in 1879. Studied under the first Chikuzen Biwa player Tachibana Kyokuo. Later, studied Gidayu-bushi in Osaka, but returned to the Biwa. He gained popularity for his melodies incorporating the tunes of Joruri and his beautiful voice. His pupils included Hirata Kyokushu and others. Died on March 3, 1938, at the age of 60. Born in Fukuoka Prefecture. His real name was Usaburo. His pen name was originally Kyokko.

明治12年生まれ。筑前(ちくぜん)琵琶の初代橘旭翁(たちばな-きょくおう)に師事する。のち大阪で義太夫節もまなぶが,琵琶にもどる。浄瑠璃(じょうるり)の調子をとりいれた旋律と美声で人気を博した。門弟に平田旭舟(きょくしゅう)らがいる。昭和13年3月3日死去。60歳。福岡県出身。本名は卯三郎。号ははじめ旭光。
