He was the second son of Henry, Duke of Bouillon, ruler of the Petite Duchy (capital: Sedan), which was located between the Holy Roman Empire and the Kingdom of France and maintained its independence. His mother was the daughter of William I, Prince of Orange. Under his mother's influence, he was raised as a Protestant and educated as a soldier before serving the King of France. His outstanding qualities led him to achieve many distinguished services on the eastern front and in Italy during the Thirty Years' War. He gained fame in particular for his great victory at the Battle of Nordlingen (1645), and thereafter he was praised as a military commander representing France in both name and reality, and was highly trusted by his soldiers.
