An annual vine of the Cucurbitaceae family. Native to India, but widely cultivated around the world. Young branches twine with modified tendrils. The plant is covered with coarse hairs. The alternate leaves are shallowly palmately lobed and 8-15cm long. Monoecious. Yellow unisexual flowers bloom in summer. Male flowers have three stamens, while female flowers have a long ovary below the flower. The fruit is a cylindrical berry that turns yellow when ripe. In addition to being planted directly, it can be harvested throughout the year through greenhouse forced cultivation and retarded cultivation. There are many varieties, including green-fruited Shogoin, Aonaga, and Ochiai, and semi-white-fruited Yodo and Magome.
