… Modern art music blossomed after the country was liberated from the long period of Turkish rule (1878). Emanuil Manolov (1860-1902), Panajot Pipkov (1871-1942), Georgi Atanasov (1882-1931), and Dobri Hristov (1875-1941) composed operas and choral pieces based on folk themes. In the early 20th century, conservatories and opera societies were established, and many of the musicians who studied there were active throughout the First and Second World Wars. …
