During the Spring and Autumn Period and Warring States Period, it was called the Quzi City of Wu, and during the Han Dynasty it was Wuhu County and belonged to Danyang County, but was later abolished and revived as Wuhu Town in the Tang Dynasty and promoted to a county. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, commerce flourished as a distribution center for goods from the Qingyi River basin and the Chaohu area, and it was known as the leader of China's four major rice cities. It was opened to the public by the Treaty of Chifu in 1876, and exported goods from the middle reaches of the Yangtze River via Shanghai. In 1949, it was separated from Wuhu County and established as a city.

It is an important river port on the Yangtze River, and is also one of the hubs of land and water transport in the southern part of the province, with the Ningwu Line (Nanjing-Wuhu), Ningtong Line (Nanjing-Tongling), Huainan Line (Huainan-Wuhu), Wangan Line (Wuhu-Yingtan), Xuanhang Line (Xuacheng-Hangzhou), Ning'an High Speed Railway (Nanjing-Anqing), and Beijing-Fuzhou High Speed Railway (Beijing-Fuzhou). Coal, manganese, and iron ore are produced in the surrounding area, and industries such as automobile parts, spinning, and electronic parts are well developed. Other famous traditional crafts include the Santou (kitchen knife, scissors, razor) and Sanga (iron painting, lacquer painting, and tsuso painting).
