〘noun〙① A sign. A mark used to check the relationship between things. Simple letters and other figures used as a mark for searching things. A symbol. ※Ranto Shishiji (1815), Vol. 1 "In order to add a symbol, a cross was drawn inside a circle and placed there." ② A mark established to convey certain information or represent a certain matter. It can be a mark other than letters, or a mark that uses letters. Telegraph code, Morse code, repeating code, punctuation code, etc. ※Shogaku Kagaku Sho (1874), Ministry of Education, Vol. 3 "The signs O and Hg do not simply refer to indefinite oxygen or mercury in general." ③ In mathematics, the symbols that represent positive and negative numbers, i.e. the positive sign "+" and the negative sign "-".
