Hurst (1922), who first introduced this concept to medicine, defined it as a disease caused by the patient's self-suggestion due to the doctor's examination, attitude, explanation, etc. However, in modern times, it is considered to include not only iatrogenic neurosis but also diseases caused by inappropriate medical treatment given to the patient or side effects of drugs. 医原性疾患ともいう。この概念を最初に医学に導入した A.ハースト (1922) は,医師の検査,態度,説明などに起因する,患者の自己暗示によって起った病気と定義している。しかし現代では,こうした医原性神経症にとどまらず,患者に施した医療が不適当であったり,薬剤などの副作用のために起る疾患も含めて考えられている。抗生物質の長期にわたる大量投与よって引起された菌交代現象はその代表的なもの。
