In the Earth's magnetosphere, which is filled with high-temperature plasma, various electromagnetic waves specific to plasma are observed, including magnetohydrodynamic waves such as Alfven waves, Whistler waves, and electrostatic plasma waves. The frequencies of these waves span a wide range, from approximately 10 ^-3 Hz to 10 ⁶ Hz. Waves in the lowest frequency band, below approximately 5 Hz, have long been known as geomagnetic pulsations. Pulsation phenomena with periods of tens of seconds or more (below tens of mHz) are mainly caused by the natural vibration of magnetic field lines excited by magnetosonic waves generated by deformation of the magnetopause boundary surface due to the solar wind.

高温のプラズマで満たされた地球磁気圏では，アルベーン波などの電磁流体波，ホイッスラー波や静電プラズマ波など，さまざまなプラズマ特有の電磁波動が観測される。これらの波動の周波数は，ほぼ10^－3Hzから10⁶Hzまでの広い帯域にわたっている。　約5Hz以下の最も低い周波数帯に属する波動は，地磁気脈動として古くから知られている。周期数十秒以上(数十mHz以下)の脈動現象は，太陽風による磁気圏境界面の変形によって生じた磁気音波によって励起された磁力線の固有振動がおもな発生原因である。
