The name of a genre of Japanese music. This is a new style of Japanese music that was established in 1933 (Showa 8) by Kishiro Okura (1882-1963), the eldest son of Kihachiro Okura, who founded the Okura Group. Okura, who had a deep knowledge of Western music, introduced that knowledge and technique into shamisen music, and composed pieces such as "Rice Planting" and "Kinuta". The singer Kishigami Kimi (1897-1962) also wrote "Fox" and "Sumidagawa" (both with lyrics by Nagata Mikihiko) around 1938. Around that time, Miyagawa Juro (Kiyomoto Eijuro) joined the group. Miyagawa, who was proficient in the Tomei style, brought in Tomei's unique techniques to compose pieces such as "Iris" and "Yukiore Dake". He also presented to the world as his own composition a piece that could easily be mistaken for the Tomei-ryu song "Haru no Tori," such as "Uguisu." The Yamato Orchestra's first concert was in 1943, held at Hibiya Public Hall by Asai Maruko (1891-1974), Ino Hatsue, and other dancers, including Fujima Kansōga (1910-2000) and Hanayagi Jusuke. In 1968 (Showa 43), the group split into two factions. In 1976, Mishima Reiko (1905-1988) changed her name to Yamato Miyoki and became head of the school, welcoming Nagauta performer Yoshimura Isochi (1938-2013) to the shamisen. Isochi's name was Yamato Kuma, but he also composed songs such as "Snowstorm of Flowers" under the name Haga Minoru.
