A Christian religious order founded in 1875 in a Dutch style by German priest Arnold Janssen (1837-1909). It was named the Society of the Divine Word because of its deep understanding of the character of Christ as the "Word of God." Its main purpose was evangelizing non-believers, and it sent many missionaries to places such as Shandong Province in China, Togo in Africa, and New Guinea. It came to Japan in 1907 (Meiji 40), and was in charge of the dioceses of Niigata and Nagoya. It was also active in education, and currently runs Nanzan University. In connection with its missionary activities, it also devoted itself to cultural anthropology research, and the Anthropos Institute (now in St. Augustin, Germany), which was opened in Vienna by Wilhelm Schmidt, a member of the Society of the Divine Word, is its central institution.
