Ajima Nanzan

...A mathematician of the mid-Edo period. His pen name was Hakuki and his pen name was Nanzan. He was a samurai of the Shinjo Domain (Yamagata Prefecture) stationed in Edo. He was born in Edo. He studied mathematics, astronomy, and calendar science under Yamaji Nunaju. He served as Yamaji's assistant in making calendars. Yasushima's research was original, and he greatly advanced the mathematics of Seki Takakazu and Takebe Katahiro. He perfected the formula for binomial expansion with the exponent 1/ n , and was the first to show the method of double integration to calculate the volume of the intersecting part of an intersecting cylinder.
