...Artificial insemination was said to have been discussed in ancient Palestine in the 2nd century, but the beginning of artificial insemination in humans was in 1799, when John Hunter of England succeeded in injecting the sperm of a hypospadias man into his wife's vagina and resulting in pregnancy. As for AID, it was first performed in 1884 by J. Pancoast on the wife of a husband with azoospermia, and in Japan, the first AID baby girl was born in 1949 at the Keio Hospital Obstetrics and Gynecology Family Planning Counseling Center. Currently, artificial insemination occupies a major position as a method of infertility treatment.

…人工授精に関してはすでに2世紀の古代パレスティナで論議されたといわれるが，1799年イギリスのジョン･ハンターが尿道下裂の男性の精液をその妻の腟内に注入して妊娠に成功したのが，ヒトにおける人工授精の始まりである。AIDに関しては，1884年パンコーストJ.Pancoastにより，無精子症の夫をもつ妻に対して行われたのが最初であり，日本でも1949年，慶応病院産婦人科家族計画相談所でAID第1号の女児が誕生している。現在では不妊治療の一法として人工授精は大きな位置を占めている。…
