Singh, Manmohan
Born September 26, 1932. Gir. Indian politician and economist. Prime Minister (in office 2004-14). A Sikh, he was India's first non-Hindu Prime Minister. He studied at the University of the Punjab before moving to Cambridge in England. In 1962, he received his PhD in economics from Oxford University. In the 1970s, he served as an economic advisor to several ministries and a member of the Prime Minister's Advisory Council. He was a member of the Central Bank of India from 1976 to 1980 and its Governor from 1982 to 1985. He was appointed Finance Minister in 1991, and demonstrated his skill in economic reforms in India, which was on the brink of economic collapse at the time, laying the foundation for economic prosperity. He was elected to the Senate as a member of the Indian National Congress in 1991, and served as Finance Minister until 1996. He ran in the 1999 Lok Sabha election but lost. The Congress Party won the 2004 election, but Sonia Gandhi, the party's president, refused the position of prime minister and appointed Singh as prime minister. As prime minister, he led rapid economic growth and secured an agreement with the United States on civilian nuclear cooperation to meet growing domestic energy demand. However, he was criticized for being pro-American. In the 2009 election, the ruling coalition led by the Congress Party increased its number of seats, and the second Singh Cabinet was formed. In early 2014, he announced that he would not seek a third term, and stepped down after the election held in April-May of that year.
