It is a broad-based or pedunculated edematous mass that occurs most frequently on the edge of the vocal cords. Its surface is smooth and often slightly redder than the surrounding normal mucosa, and it ranges in size from the size of a millet to large enough to cover almost the entire length of the vocal cords. There are various theories about its origin, but the currently accepted theory is that it is directly caused by vascular rupture due to circulatory disorders caused by vocal abuse, smoking, or local acute inflammation. Common symptoms include complaints of "hoarseness" and "fatigue when speaking." Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
