A city in central Hokkaido. It was incorporated as a city in 1922. It faces Ishikari Bay and is connected to the Hakodate Main Line, and the Sasson Expressway was opened in 1992. It developed as a coal shipping port for the Ishikari coalfields, and prospered through exports of seafood and miscellaneous grains, as well as trade with Sakhalin and the continent. In addition to a large canning factory, there are rubber, vehicle, oil, and paper factories. The city's seafood catches include cod, Atka mackerel, flounder, and mackerel. After World War II, the economic situation changed, and the center of the prefecture moved to Sapporo. The city area spreads from the coastal road to the mountain slopes, and there are many hills. Zenibako in the east was once a prosperous area for herring fishing, and Ranshima Beach and Oshoro Beach in the west belong to the Niseko-Shakotan-Otaru Coast National Park. There are tourist attractions such as Temiya Cave (historic site), Otaru Port Marina, and the stone warehouses around the Otaru Canal. Area: 243.83 km2 .
