Located in Nikenyacho, Tokushima City. It enshrines Amenohiwashi no Mikoto, the ancestor of the Ibe clan of Awa (Tokushima Prefecture). The deity is said to have been a god who, in ancient times, planted the grain cotton, established the paper-making and spinning industries, and demonstrated great achievements. In later generations, he was called Oe no Kami in honour of his divine virtue, and his descendants took the name Ibe and became involved in national rituals. Under the Engi system, he was ranked as a Myojin Taisha, and in 1871 (Meiji 4) became a National Heisei Chusha. He was later transferred to his current location in 1885. The annual festival is held on October 19th. [Ishu Ochiai] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
