Meerschaum - Meerschaum
A fibrous mineral with a grayish white, yellowish red or blue-green color. It is found in serpentine, skarn, hot spring deposits, etc. Its chemical formula is Mg 4 Si 6 O 1 5 (OH) 26 H 2 O, and it contains small amounts of Al, Fe, Na, and H. It has an orthorhombic crystal system. Its hardness is 2-2.5, and its specific gravity is 2.25. It is so light that it floats on water when dry, and has a dense (honey) texture, making it a highly prized pipe material (Meerschaum). It is mainly found in Asia Minor, and its Vienna filigree carvings are famous.
