Imbe clan

Japanese: 忌部氏 - いんべうじ
Imbe clan

Also written as Inbeshi. The clan name was responsible for the Imperial Court's rituals along with the Nakatomi clan. Their ancestor was Amenotama no Mikoto, and their main family was Takechi County, Yamato Province (currently near Imbe-cho, Kashihara City, Nara Prefecture), where they were in charge of Imbe as Shinabe. They are also found in Awa and Kii Provinces. Their Kabane (family name) was originally Obito, and in 680 (the 9th year of Emperor Tenmu's reign) they were granted Muraji, and in 684 they were granted Sukune, and in 803 (the 22nd year of Enryaku) they changed their name to Saibe. They were responsible for the construction of palaces, the coordination of ritual implements, practical matters such as the offering of offerings (hanpei) and sacred seals (mirrors and swords), and the presentation of prayers (collected in the Engishiki) for the Oto no Hogai and Mikado Hogai festivals. During the Nara period, they were appointed as Hohei-shi (officials of offerings) to Ise Grand Shrine along with the Nakatomi clan, but due to the influence of the Nakatomi clan, they were no longer appointed. The details of the events that took place during this time are found in the Kogoshuui by Inbe no Hironari.
