〘Noun〙① (Translation of puṇya-kṣetra. Meaning a field that produces good fortune) A Buddhist term. A person who brings about good fortune, just as a field produces good things. When one respects the Buddha, monks, parents, the poor, etc., and gives alms, it produces a lot of good fortune and merit is gained, so it is likened to a field. The Buddha is called the great field of good fortune, the Buddha and monks are called the field of respectful good fortune (respect field), parents and teachers are called the field of grateful good fortune (on field), and the poor and sick are called the field of poverty and misery good fortune (sad field). There are various other types of fields of good fortune. ※Shoku Nihongi - Yoro 3rd year (719), November 1st, Otou "When the envoy sends a messenger to the world, Kuwanamon , with wisdom, he will surely not descend into a field of good fortune that will grow, and cross the sea of suffering on a raft of treasures."② By extension, it means doing good deeds. ※Ukiyo-zoshi, Nihon Shin Eitai-kura (1713) 1 "The fields of good seedlings that were planted in the past are now a thousand wards wide." ③ The rice fields are used to express the fact that everyone has the potential to be happy. ※The Transmission of the Silver Tree (1802) "Even if a person has a field of good seedlings , he or she will not become rich unless he or she earns it." ④ A sacred area. ※Yomihon, Ugetsu Monogatari (1776) Bukhoso "Even pebbles have been swept away in the fields of good seedlings . 〘名〙① (puṇya-kṣetra の訳。福を生ずる田の意) 仏語。田がよく物を生ずるように、福徳を得させる人のこと。仏や僧、父母、貧者などを敬い、施しを行なうとき、多くの福徳を生み、功徳が得られるところから、これを田にたとえていう。仏を大福田といい、仏や僧を恭敬福田(敬田)、父母や師を報恩福田(恩田)、貧者や病者を貧窮福田(悲田)という。その他、種々の福田を数える。※続日本紀‐養老三年(719)一一月乙卯「儻使二天下桑門智行如レ此者一、豈不下殖二善根一之福田、渡二苦海一之宝筏上」② 転じて、善事を行なうこと。※浮世草子・日本新永代蔵(1713)一「過しためし今に其、善苗の福田(フクデン)、千町にこえて」③ 人には皆幸福になれる素質があることを田にたとえていう。※銀のなる木の伝授(1802)「人に福田(フクデン)ありといへど、かせがざれば富む事あたはず」④ 霊域のこと。※読本・雨月物語(1776)仏法僧「小石だも掃ひし福田(フクデン)ながら」
