...However, the use of earthenware coffins is widespread in the Brazilian Amazon, Venezuela, Colombia, northwestern Argentina, eastern Bolivia, and northern Chile. The Amazonian Eluria people, like other tribes in the area, use an old canoe cut in two and place one half on top as a lid to make a coffin. They then fill the gaps and holes in the coffin with broken pottery or bark, and bury the coffin in a deep pit dug in a corner of their communal hut (maloca).
