A town in the province of Turin in the Piedmont region of northwestern Italy. In Latin, it is called Eporedia. It is located about 50 km north-northeast of Turin, on the banks of the Dravaltea River. In 143 BC, Rome captured it from the Celtic Thalassi people because of its gold mines. In the Middle Ages, it came under the rule of the Lombard Kingdom (→Lombard tribes), and was subsequently ruled by two Italian kings, Berengar II in 950 and Arduino, Margrave of Ivrea in 1002. In 1266, it became the Marquis of Monferrato, and in 1313, it became the domain of the House of Savoy. In modern times, textile and food industries have flourished. It is the headquarters of Olivetti, a famous office equipment manufacturer for typewriters, and its factory and related facilities were registered as a cultural heritage of the World Heritage Sites in 2018. It is famous for the historic orange-throwing festival held every February. Population: 24,188 (estimated 2006).
