Classification of infectious diseases under the old Infectious Diseases Prevention Law. Eleven types of infectious diseases: cholera, dysentery including dysentery (→ amoebic dysentery, bacterial dysentery), typhoid fever, paratyphoid fever, smallpox, typhus, scarlet fever, diphtheria, epidemic cerebrospinal meningitis, plague, and Japanese encephalitis. Doctors who diagnosed patients with these infectious diseases or examined their bodies were required to report them to the mayor of the city or town or the head of the health center in their jurisdiction (→ health center), and heads of households with infectious or suspected patients were also required to see a doctor and report them. Regulations also included isolating patients, disinfecting their belongings and homes, and testing family members or contacts. Today, measures are prescribed for these infectious diseases according to their classification under the Law on the Prevention of Infectious Diseases and Medical Care for Patients with Infectious Diseases.
