Santomi Shinden - Santomi Shinden

Japanese: 三富新田 - さんとめしんでん

A collective name for the three new fields (Kamitome, Nakatomi, and Shimofumi) opened by the Musashi-Kawagoe Domain during the Genroku period (1688-1704). Also called Santomi. In 1694, the domain lord Yanagisawa Yasuaki ordered his vassal Sone Gondayu and others to settle farmers from nearby villages, and in 1696 a land survey was carried out and the village was established. As a spiritual base for the settlers, Tafukuji Temple was built in Kamitome and Bishamonten Shrine in Nakatomi. Roads were laid out in a grid pattern, with houses facing the roads and farmland divided into rectangular strips behind them, with each house owning an area of 5 cho. The village name is said to have been taken from the chapter on Zilu in the Analects of Confucius. Kamitome is in present-day Miyoshi Town, Saitama Prefecture, while Nakatomi and Shimofumi are in Tokorozawa City, Saitama Prefecture, and the land division from the time of development remains from Nakatomi to Shimofumi. → New Field Development

元禄期（1688年―1704年）に武蔵川越藩が開いた三新田（上富新田・中富新田・下富新田）の総称。〈さんとみ〉ともいう。1694年藩主柳沢保明が家臣曾根権太夫らに命じて近村の農民を入植させ，1696年検地を行って立村。入植者の精神的拠所として上富(かみとめ)に多福寺，中富に毘沙門天社を創建した。道路を碁盤の目のように造り，それに面して住居，その奥に畑地が短冊形に区画され，一軒分の所持面積は５町であった。村名は《論語》の子路篇からとったという。上富は現埼玉県三芳(みよし)町，中富・下富は同県所沢市にあり，中富から下富にかけて開拓時の地割が残る。→新田開発
