Buxtehude

Japanese:
Buxtehude
Danish organist and composer. His ancestors are said to have been from North Germany, and he was presumably born in Bad Oldesloe (now part of Germany), where his father, the organist, was stationed. After working as an organist in Helsingborg (now part of Sweden) and Helsingör in Denmark, he became the organist at St. Mary's Church in Lübeck in 1668. He held this position for the rest of his life and spread his fame throughout Germany. He is considered the greatest master of the North German organ school, and his organ music had a great influence on JS Bach. His more than 100 sacred vocal pieces also show a variety of forms that connect Schütz's concertos and Bach's cantatas, and occupy an important position in the history of the development of Protestant church music. He also dramatically developed the Abendmusik (evening music) concerts that had become a tradition in the church, and held large-scale public concerts including a choir and orchestra. This unprecedented attempt at the time gained him a reputation throughout Germany. It is well known that in 1705, when Bach was in Arnstadt, he traveled nearly 400km to Lübeck to listen to his performance. → Christian music → Related topics Pachelbel
