Belgian-born novelist and playwright. His real name was Louis Carette. He wrote in French. After World War II, he settled in Italy and then France. His first novel, Chasseneuil (1948), was a success, and he continued to produce works filled with compassion for human beings, neither great nor small. His works include Capri, petite île (51), Chair et cuir (51), Les Elans du cœur (55, Prix Interélie), Creezy (69, Prix Goncourt), and the essay Casanova ou l'Anti-Don Juan (55). He also wrote plays, such as L'œuf (56), La bonne soupe (58), Madame Princesse (65) and the scenario Sept Péchés capitaux (62), among which he achieved great fame. Other outstanding plays include L'Ouvre-boîte (72) and L'Homme en question (73). He was a member of the Académie Française (75).

[Died] September 22, 2007. French pantomime actor from Cahors. His real name was Marcel Mangel. He was a master of pantomime for more than half a century. He studied under Charles Durand and Etienne Decroux, and gave a brilliant performance as Harlequin in "Baptiste" (1947) directed by Jean-Louis Barrault. In 1947, he founded a theater company specializing in pantomime. He created a modern clown named Bip, who wears white face paint, and was successful in "Death at Dawn" (1948) and "The Overcoat" (1951), and toured around the world and visited Japan several times. His performance, called "stylized mime," created a silent poem through simple and clear movements and meticulous calculation of timing. He appeared in films such as "Barbarella" (1968) and "Silent Movie" (1976). In 1978, he founded a pantomime school in Paris. He retired in 2005. In 1970, he was awarded the Legion of Honor. Marceau(Marceau-Desgraviers), François Severin

Born: March 1, 1769 in Chartres
[Died] September 21, 1796, Altenkirchen. French military officer and general. In 1785, he joined the Savoie-Carignan infantry, and in 1789, he participated in the storming of the Bastille in Paris. In 1792, he joined the Chartres National Army, and participated in the siege of Verdun. The following year, he gained fame in the Battle of Vendée. In June 1796, he won a victory over the Austrian army, but in September of the same year, he was killed in battle at Altenkirchen while covering the retreat of J. Jourdan.

フランスのパントマイム役者。本名 Marcel Mangel。半世紀以上にわたり,パントマイム界で活躍した巨匠。シャルル・デュランとエチエンヌ・ドクルーに学び,ジャン=ルイ・バロー演出の『バティスト』 (1947) のアルルカン役で好演した。 1947年パントマイム専門の劇団を創立。白塗りの顔のビップという現代のピエロを創造,『暁に死す』 (1948) ,『外套』 (1951) などで成功し,世界各地を巡業,日本にも数度来演した。「様式のマイム」といわれるその演技は,単純明快な動作と時間の綿密な計算によって,沈黙の詩をつくりだした。映画『バーバレラ』 (1968) ,『サイレントムービー』 (1976) などに出演した。 1978年パリにパントマイムの学校を設立。 2005年に現役を引退。 1970年レジオン・ドヌール勲章を授与された。 (→パントマイム )

フランスの軍人,将軍。 1785年サボア=カリニャン歩兵隊に入隊,89年パリのバスティーユ襲撃に参加。 92年シャルトル国民軍に加わり,ベルダンの攻防に参加し,翌年バンデーの戦いで名声を得た。 96年6月オーストリア軍に勝利したが,同年9月 J.ジュールダンの退却を援護中,アルテンキルヘンで戦死。
