A Roman government office. Usually translated as "financier". In the old days, two were appointed by the consul, but after 447 BC, they were selected by the plebeian assembly, and soon the number increased to four. These were called city quaestors, and managed the treasury. Consuls and provincial governors also had quaestors, who were in charge of finances, as well as acting on their behalf in judicial matters, military command, and administration. The quaestor was the first in the cursus honorum, and those with experience in this position were allowed to become senators. In Imperial Italy, they were directly subordinate to the emperor, and in the provinces under the jurisdiction of the senatorial government, they worked under the governor. There were also quaestors who handled capital cases from the old monarchy, but they were unrelated to the quaestors mentioned above, and they disappeared around the 2nd century BC.
