The Protestant Matthias Flacius Illyricus (1520-75) took this a step further, working to prove that Lutheranism was the heir to the traditions of the ancient church. However, the Catholic Caesar Baronius (1538-1607) published the 12-volume Annals of the Church up to 1198, based on a comprehensive study of even more historical sources, refuting this view. …
