The flow technique was limited to reactions with half-lives of about 10 ⁻³ s, but the flash technique (around 1950) developed by Ronald George Wreyford Norrish (1897-1978) and George Porter (1920- ) made it possible to handle reactions with half-lives of about 10 ⁻⁶ s, and the relaxation technique developed by M. Eigen made it possible to handle reactions with half-lives of 10 ⁻⁸ to 10 ⁻⁹ s, and the details of ionic reactions in aqueous solutions and explosive reactions in the gas phase became clear.
