Fukusuke

A type of lucky doll that is said to bring good fortune. It is a short, baby-faced, large-headed male doll with a topknot and a kamishimo (traditional Japanese formal kimono) sitting upright. It is said to be modeled after a real person named Satoru, who lived a long life and died around the Kyowa period (1801-04) of the Edo period. Satoru was born into a farming family in Settsu Province and was a dwarf (about 60 cm tall) with a large head, but he is said to have lived a long and fortunate life. However, it is said that clay Fukusuke dolls were already popular in Edo during the Kyoho period (1716-36).
