An Arabian astronomer in the first half of the 9th century. Dates of birth and death unknown. He was active under the seventh Abbasid caliph, Ma'mun (reigned 813-833), and conducted observations in Baghdad and Damascus. His name means "of the astrolabe," indicating that he was particularly known for making astronomical instruments. His writings on the astrolabe remain, and are among the oldest surviving in Arabia. The results of his astronomical observations from this period were later cited by Ibn Yunus and Biruni. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
