...As a sport, it is played in many countries, mainly in the UK, Germany and the US, and there are speed (roller speed skating) and figure (roller figure skating) competitions modelled on ice skating, as well as road races. The International Roller Skating Federation (FIRS) was formed in 1924, and world championships have been held since 1936. Five-a-side roller hockey has also been played since the early 20th century, and world championships have been held since 1983.
