Japanese: 福井[市] - ふくい
Fukui [city] - Fukui
A city in central Fukui Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1889 and is the prefectural capital. Facing the Sea of Japan, it occupies the southern part of the Fukui Plain and the northern part of the Nyu Mountains. The central city, which straddles both banks of the Asuwa River, developed as a castle town for the Matsudaira clan, a related clan of the Tokugawa clan. It was destroyed in World War II and the 1948 Fukui earthquake, but was rebuilt based on a new urban plan, and although it has one of the highest rates of sewerage coverage and urban parks in the country, there is almost no trace of the castle town. It is a junction of the Hokuriku Main Line and the Echizen-Minami Hokuriku Line, and is served by the Echizen Railway, Fukui Railway, Hokuriku Expressway, and National Route 8. It is known for its silk, rayon, and synthetic textiles, such as traditional habutae, and machinery and plastic processing industries are also carried out, and the city's industries are the second largest in the prefecture in terms of manufacturing shipment value (2003). There is Fukui University, Asuwayama Park, and Fujishima Shrine, and the coastal area is part of the Echizen Kaga Coast Quasi-National Park. Ichijodani in the southeast of the city was the castle site of the Asakura clan in the Middle Ages, and its ruins (special historic site) and gardens (places of scenic beauty) remain. In February 2006, the city incorporated Miyama Town in Asuwa County, Shimizu Town in Nyu County, and Koshino Village. 536.41 km2 . Population: 266,796 (2010).
